Artist Shaun Gladwell

About The Artist

Shaun Gladwell (b. 1972) is a Sydney and London based Australian artist who predominantly works in moving image and performance art. He also uses other media including; painting, photography, sculpture, installation and virtual reality. Gladwell has studied art extensively at ‘Sydney University’ and ‘University of New South Wales’ and was an associate researcher at ‘Goldsmiths, University of London’.

“The world is happening faster than our senses can process it and art takes on this role where we are really having to question our immediate environment.” – Shaun Gladwell

Gladwell’s videos show him interacting with different environments through performance. His videos depict movements in both urban and natural environments, and they distort, manipulate and defy the natural effects of speed and gravity. Before being an artist, Shaun Gladwell was a sponsored skateboarder. His artwork often features skateboarding in architectural environments.

Shaun Gladwell has exhibited locally and internationally. His solo exhibitions include: ‘Control, The Lock Up’, Newcastle; ‘The Lacrima Chair’, ‘Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation’, Sydney; ‘Shaun Gladwell: BMX Channel’, ‘Mark Moore Gallery’, California; ‘Shaun Gladwell: Field Recordings’, ‘Samstag Museum, University of South Australia’, Adelaide; ‘Broken Dance (Beatboxed)’, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; ‘Perpetual 360° Sessions, SCHUNCK*’ Heerlen, The Netherlands; and ‘Shaun Gladwell: Stereo Sequences’, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne. Gladwell was also the official war artist in 2009-10 when he toured Afghanistan.

Gladwell’s work has been featured in various group exhibitions nationally and internationally. In 2009, Gladwell was Australia’s representative at the ‘53rd Venice Biennale’ and has extensively participated in Biennales and Triennials all over the world. Gladwell has recently joined ‘BADFAITH’, an artist collective made up of filmmakers and artists who are developing virtual reality projects.

Gladwell has become nationally recognized by well established art institutions such as the ‘Art Gallery of New South Wales’. His unconventional techniques have become a source of inspiration for younger contemporary artists. Past sales have ranged from $15,000 - $180,000.
